(from “You Are What You Read by Jessica Zafra)

“It is not the most action-packed of myths. It’s about an old couple, poor but happy, who welcomed a pair of wayfarers into their hovel when no one else would.

I’ve heard tumblr is a bit of a hotspot for radical feminists, i haven’t come across it too much and when i have i’ve been rather intrigued…

Why?

We do have equality, i am 100% for equality, no matter what gender / race / sexuality / etc. But, we have it, there are equal pay acts, women can work…

so, femenine and masculine values. Polemical sticky thing....

I really want to make a theme of this.

so, femenine and masculine values. Polemical sticky thing. Women conserve structures, make homes, look after babies (or let’s say that at least that that’s their biological function. A baby is a part of it’s mum when it’s born, plus she has the food. But I’ve been drifting away from this conception since my little brother was born and I saw that he needs his father almost as much as mother, so both are definiteley needed-needed).But ayway. There’s this theory rthat women tend to be the more conservative ones because they tend to tie bonds up again, resolve the conflicts, patch things up, keep things in their place, keep order, etc. And the male are supposedly the ones that go out hunting and all that (just think back to cavemen and you get it…I know women work almost as much as men in many places some day, I know that with education women can be as innovative as men can, etcetc.) But anywas, leaving apart all this gender-characteristics stuff, what we need is a good empathic mixture of both.

So what does that mean?

That n every epoque of transition there have been two parties.

The ones that wanted everything to be as it was before because it favoured them, and the ones that wanted to change everything because it favoured them.

When what we, in fact, need, is both. We need the want for innovation and the keeping of structures that already work and that also “keep us together” like healthy traditions and rituals.

So what we need as a basis is readiness to change, collaboration, openess, and wanting everyone to be equal. Give up our sofa so that someone else can eat. Letting a stranger come by for supper, that kind of thing. Not thinking about keeping our advantadges for ours.

Being empathic, not patriarchic. We need feminity in the oxytocine loaden sense. Horizontal and mobile global networks and local intimate spheres. Globalisation yes, intimacy, identity and locality also.

This is sadly completely incompatible with r¡notorious rivality, capitalism, egoism, violence, ignorance, indiference, etc.

Y todavía no he contado las guerras civiles.

Me avergonzaría.

Antes no.

neutralfool:

Young Girl Defending herself against Cupid (1880) - William Bouguereau

So whilst other artists got into impressionism and even avantguards William Bougerau continued painting with this calssical idealized style.

There is much play in this picture; the girl is looking at cupid as if he is a little mischiefous boy who knows he’s being naughty.

Painter of photographis quality, religious works and sentimental nudes with a timid eroticism. (Ian Chilvers)

He mostly tended to romanticism, menlancholy and beauty but also made some violent works like Virgilio’s inferno.

He mostly had american and english collectionists. Was obviously very hard-working seing as he produced more than 700 paintings.

Queen Marie José wearing the diamond and pearl tiara inherited from Empress Charlotte of Mexico, which used to belong to Empress of France Josephine Bonaparte

Marie-Jose had an intimate relationship with Benito Mussolini, according to love letters revealed by Mussolini’s son. However, her behavior towards the allies, her sympathies with rebels, and her negative judgments of Mussolini dispute this.

A British diplomat in Rome recorded that the Princess of Piedmont was the only member of the Italian Royal Family with good political judgment.

She sympathized with the partisans*, and while she was a refugee in Switzerland, smuggled weapons, money and food for them. She was even proposed to be appointed as chief of a partisan brigade, but declined.

February 19, 1942: Franklin D. Roosevelt issues Executive Order 9066.

The order provided for the designation of military areas (to be decided by the Secretary of War and commanders of the U.S. armed forces) from which “any or all persons” could be relocated. No specific ethnic groups or sections of the nation were singled out in the text of the order, but it stated that these new powers would serve as “protection against espionage and against sabotage”. In practice, it resulted in the internment of 120,000 Japanese-Americans, nearly two-thirds of whom were American-born citizens; smaller numbers of German- and Italian-Americans were interned as well, but no ethnic group was targeted by the government to the extent that the Japanese were.

Virtually every Japanese-American living on the West Coast was interned, while a small fraction of those living in Hawaii - just over a thousand - suffered the same fate. The justification for the executive order was practical; it was believed that many Japanese, Issei and Sansei alike, could not possibly remain loyal to the United States if it went to war with Japan. It was outwardly practical (the Ni’ihau Incident seemed to prove American suspicions), and it was deeply rooted in racial prejudice. Many white farmers were glad to see their Japanese competition uprooted and displaced; several newspapers printed opinion pieces that supported wholeheartedly the internment based on their own personal feelings toward the Japanese; the American public (including even Theodore Geisel/Dr. Seuss) generally supported the move; and the Supreme Court, the ultimate defender and interpreter of the U.S. Constitution, upheld the constitutionality of the executive order in Korematsu v. U.S. (also see: Hirabayashi v. U.S.). Camps were run by the Wartime Civil Control Administration and the War Relocation Authority; the largest of these by population were Tule Lake and Poston, but the most well-known today is Manzanar.

Some Japanese-Americans escaped internment by volunteering to serve in the U.S. Army, and many of them served in the famous 442nd Infantry Regiment, a unit that fought in Europe after 1944. Ironically, while many of its members’ families remained interned at home based on widespread racism and suspicions of disloyalty, this all-Japanese unit eventually became the most decorated infantry regiment in the history of the U.S. Army: twenty-one of its members were awarded the Medal of Honor.

Executive Order 9066 was eventually rescinded in 1976, and surviving Japanese internees received payments and apologies from the U.S. government in the 1990s. But money paid four decades later could not compensate for the time lost in the camps; the businesses, homes, farms, and other property sold last-minute at ridiculously low prices by their owners or vandalized and destroyed in their absence; and the humiliation and disillusionment at having been denounced by their own countrymen and rounded up by their own government.

Images compiled by The Atlantic

February 22, 1943: Members of the White Rose are executed.

The White Rose (die Weiße Rose) was one of the most famous anti-Nazi resistance groups working within the borders of the Third Reich; their defiant opposition against Adolf Hitler and the atrocities and oppression of his government was and is especially remarkable when juxtaposed with the traditional image of the apathetic German citizen, oblivious to or unwilling to speak out against the crimes of their own leaders and military. The principal members of the organization were students from the University of Munich - Hans and Sophie Scholl, Alex Schmorell, Willi Graf, Lilo Berndl, Jürgen Wittenstein, Falk Harnack, Christoph Probst, Traute Lafrenz, Katharina Schueddekopf, and Marie-Luise Jahn. Several had refused to join the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls ,(membership was, at that point in the war, compulsory), and most were motivated by moral reasons; some, as medical students, had witnessed the horrors of the war on the Eastern Front, atrocities committed by Germans against civilians, and the conditions of the Jewish ghettos in Warsaw and other cities.

The White Rose’s main activity was spreading awareness through leaflets and pamphlets heavily influenced by religious texts, ancient philosophy, and traditional German writers, while avoiding detection by the Gestapo. The second of the six eventual leaflets (and a seventh draft) read:

The German people slumber on in dull, stupid sleep and encourage the fascist criminals. Each wants to be exonerated of guilt, each one continues on his way with the most placid, calm conscience. But he cannot be exonerated; he is guilty, guilty, guilty!

Shortly after the total surrender of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad (and on the same day as Joseph Goebbels’ “total war” speech), a custodian at the university witnessed the Scholl siblings distributing pamphlets at the school, and the two were soon taken into custody by the Gestapo to be interrogated. Hans and Sophie Scholl, along with Christoph Probst, were tried by the People’s Court in a hasty show trial, found guilty, and executed by guillotine all on the same day - February 22,1943. More members were executed in July and October of that year, and others connected to the organization were sentenced to prison terms; however, it was the Scholls, more than any other members of the White Rose, who became symbols of selfless resistance and martyrs in postwar Germany.

We will not be silent. We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace

- Leaflet Four

I beg for no more silence.

This is a wonderful experiment.

This is a wonderful experiment.

haarleeyyy:

unhistorical:

December 19, 1946: The First Indochina War begins.

The “dirty war” was fought between France, its colonies and allies (most significantly the United States), and the State of Vietnam versus the communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam, which was supported by the Soviet Union and China, and led byHồ Chí Minh. It began as a rebellion against French occupying forces, which sought to retake its pre-World War II Southeast Asian colonies, including Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. What began as a small insurgency movement became full-blown war, which was stalemated and also highly unpopular in France, which was suffering from its own domestic problems.

Initially the United States sought to remain neutral because of its proclaimed opposition to imperialism, but as the Cold War congealed and fears of a communist takeover of the region grew, the U.S. found itself increasingly involved in the conflict. The communist People’s Republic of China, established partway through the war, could now provide more substantial aid through resources and weapons to rebel forces - although the United States provided more aid to France than China ever did to Vietnam. By the end of the war the United States was paying for 80% of the war’s costs. But whatever advantages in firepower and artillery the French possessed over their enemy, the Vietnamese made up for with an overwhelming superiority in manpower. At the end of the war, President Eisenhower introduced the idea of the domino theory in reference to communism in Indochina, the principle that would be used to justify the Second Indochina War (the Vietnam War):

…you have broader considerations that might follow what you would call the “falling domino” principle. You have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly. So you could have a beginning of a disintegration that would have the most profound influences.

(April 1954)

The war came to an end after the climactic battle at Dien Bien Phu, which culminated in a decisive victory for the Viet Minh over French forces. Soon after, the Geneva Conference began. The agreements of the conference temporarily split Vietnam into northern and southern regions, divided along the 17th parallel, to be unified in the future based on free and democratic elections, which were never held.

1968: Laurann Wakefield of Oakland “signs up” for Dr. Benjamin Spock and draft resistance.

Author and pediatrician Benjamin Spock played a prominent role in a resistance campaign against the Vietnam War. He led demonstrations across the country and spoke in favor of draft resistance and the right of servicemen to refuse to obey “illegal and immoral orders.” In April of 1967, Dr. Spock together with Martin Luther King Jr. and Harry Belafonte led a march of approximately 300,000 people to the U.N. headquarters in the New York City. He led smaller rallies for the same cause in Pittsburgh, in Washington, D.C., and other cities. At rallies, young protesters held up signs similar to the one Laurann Wakefield carried on this photo, with a peace sign used for the letter o in his name. For many young activists, according to some newspaper interviews, the idea of protesting with Dr. Spock made these protests more palatable to their parents.

In June 1967, Dr. Spock was convicted for “aiding draft resisters.” At his trial, he told the jury that he considered the war “totally illegal, immoral, unwinnable and detrimental to the best interests of the United States.”At a news conference after his conviction and sentencing, Spock said the war “violates the United Nations Charter, the Geneva accords and the United States’ promise to obey the laws of international conduct. It is totally, abominably illegal.” In 1969, the conviction was overturned and Dr. Spock continued his involvement in the antiwar movement. He was arrested three times after that because of his resistance activities.

His books were under attack as well. Vietnam War supporters blamed them for developing negative character traits, such as rebelliousness, permissiveness and an expectation of instant gratification, which led young people to join Dr. Spock in his disruptive antiwar demonstrations.

In 1972, the People’s Party, a newly formed left-wing antiwar movement, nominated Benjamin Spock as their presidential candidate in the 1972 election to run against GOP candidate Richard Nixon and Democrat George McGovern. Dr. Spock received 78,759 votes (0.1% of popular vote).

Sound Waves in Light by Gabey Tjon A Tham

Using lighted wires, Gabey simulates sound waves which undulate and vibrate in accordance with the ambient noise emanating around them. I’m not positive, but I’m pretty sure this is what opens the dimension that Gozer the Traveler resides in.

Artist: website / photos by Ed Jansen

This is a great waz of capturing and observing the “feeling” in a room…it is like an emotional thermometre. Surely, the different wave-lengths can be associated to stress livels in the voices and so on.
